Brewers at Tigers
Carlos Gomez proved that he was OK the day after taking a pitch to the head. He hit a leadoff home run, went 2-5 with 2 RBI, and he drove in winning run. Ramirez scores the tying run with his 368th home run as a third baseman, tying Graig Nettles for 5th all-time behind Mike Schmidt, Eddie Mathews, Chipper Jones, and Adrian Beltre. The Brewers won the opening game in Detroit 3-2.
In game 2, Ryan Braun, Adam Lind, and Aramis Ramirez went back-to-back-to-back for the first time since August 27, 2012 (Braun, Ramirez, Corey Hart) in a 6-run 3rd inning. All 8 runs came with two outs as the Brewers won 8-1. Braun finished with 4 RBIs. Jimmy Nelson went 8 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits and striking out 5.
Braun hit another home run, his 10th of the season, but Jonathan Broxton continues to struggle. He gave up 3 runs with 2 outs in the eighth inning, giving the Tigers a 5-2 win. The Brewers failed to get their first series sweep of the year.
Brewers at Braves
The Brewers started their series in Atlanta with a wild game. The game was tied at 1 in the bottom of the 7th when Will Smith hit a batter with 1 out. Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez pointed out a foreign substance on Smith’s arm. Umpire Jim Joyce checked it out and immediately ejected Smith. The Braves went on to score 7 runs in the inning on their way to a 10-1 win. The only bright spot for the Brewers was when Braun hit a sacrifice fly in the 4th inning. That was Braun’s 791st RBI, breaking a tie with Paul Molitor for 3rd place on the Brewers’ all time RBI list.
Braun continued his hot hitting in the second of 4 games in Atlanta. He hit a 2-run home run in the 1st inning, walked and scored in the 7th, then hit a 2-run double later in the 7th. He finished the game 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. The Brewers scored 7 runs with 2 outs in the 7th inning on their way to an 11-0 win. Wily Peralta came out in the 5th inning with a tight left side.
Game 3 turned out to be a pitcher’s duel. The Brewers took a 2-0 lead into the 5th inning. The Braves tied it up in the bottom of the 5th and it remained that way until the 11th inning. Braves’ rookie Jace Peterson delivered a 2-out base hit to drive in the winning run. Will Smith had a successful outing the day after being ejected. He struck out 3 in an inning and two thirds.
The final game of the series in Atlanta was another pitcher’s duel. Jimmy Nelson gave up a single and walked 2 in the 6th inning and 2 of those runners scored. That proved to be enough for the Braves as the Brewers could only manage one run. Braun and Ramirez both had the day off.
Will Smith
Will Smith was suspended for 8 games following his ejections for a foreign substance on his arm. The substance turned out to be a mixture of resin and suntan lotion that he uses in the bullpen on Thursday. He forgot to take it off and was subsequently ejected from the game. Smith is appealing the suspension and is available until the appeal is completed.
Injury News
Jonathan Lucroy took batting practice again on Friday. Lucroy has been on the disabled list since April 21 with a fractured toe. He has been progressing well and has been doing running drills. He will be sent on a rehab assignment soon.
Jean Segura has been on the disabled list since May 14 with a broken pinkie. He could come off the disabled list as early as Friday. Segura was upset that he was placed on the DL instead of being allowed to play through the pain, so it would be very likely that he gets right back in to the lineup.

Both teams won this week!
BassBall Fever
BassBall Fever won 6-3, mainly with hitting. Picking up Stephen Vogt when Jonathan Lucroy went down has really helped. He added a home run, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Martin Prado also had a big week, with a home run, 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. The MVP for this week, though, goes to Joe Mauer. Mauer finished the week with a home run, 5 RBIs, 5 runs scored, and a stolen base.
The pitching was pretty solid, but did not win many points. If Peralta would have been able to go 5 innings, he would have gotten the win, but it was better for the Brewers that he come out with soreness in his left side.
Brooks Robinson
Brooks Robinson shut out their opponent this week, 9-0. Apparently, Earl Weaver knows what he is doing. The only category that they did not win this week was saves, and they had 7 of them. The hitters were on fire this week. Seven hitters had 4 or more runs this week, and 6 hitters had 4 or more RBIs. Buster Posey hit .409 with a home run, 6 RBIs, and 4 runs scored. Andrew McCutchen hit .450 with 3 home runs, 5 RBIs, and 5 runs scored. But the MVP this week goes to Carlos Gomez, who had a home run, 5 RBIs, 7 runs scored, and 2 stolen bases.
Francisco Liriano had a win and 14 strikeouts while Jason Hammel added another 17 strikeouts. Fernando Rodney had 3 saves and 4 strikeouts and Huston Street added 2 saves and 2 strikeouts. Neftali Feliz looks like he may have lost his spot as closer for the Rangers. It may be time to look for a closer to replace him.

Week 6 Review
Bassball Fever had a huge week, winning 8-1. They won four out of five pitching and hitting. They went from 10th place to 6th in just one week. Brooks Robinson got crushed 9-1, pushing them further in to last place. It is time to fire the manager I think. Earl Weaver, you’re up!

The Brewers have slipped back to their losing ways this week. They lost 2 of 3 against the White Sox at Miller Park and 2 of 3 against the Mets in New York. In roster news, Jean Segura was placed on the disabled list and Scooter Gennett was optioned to AAA Colorado Springs. Carlos Gomez was hit in the head and came out of the game on Sunday, but it looks like he will be OK.
White Sox at Brewers
The Brewers started the series off against the White Sox by giving up a 6 run lead. They were up 6-0 after 4 innings and 7-2 after 5. The White Sox scored 3 in the 7th and 2 more in the 8th to tie it up. Elian Herrera hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 8th, his second straight game with a home run, and Khris Davis added another home run to give the Brewers a 10-7 victory.
Chris Sale baffled the Brewers in game 2 of the series in his first appearance after a 5 day suspension. He pitched 8 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 11. One of those runs was a home run by Herrera, his 3rd in the last 3 days. The Sox scored 2 runs late in the game to snap a 7-game road losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Brewers.
Jimmy Nelson gave up back to back home runs in a 3-run first inning of the final game of the series. White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana made sure that the lead held up, pitching 7-plus innings and striking out 10 batters. The Brewers scored a run in the 8th and 9th, but fell for the second straight day by a 4-2 score.
Brewers at Mets
Kyle Lohse had his best game of the season so far in the opener against the Mets. He pitched 8 innings and only gave up 2 hits while striking out 8. Ryan Braun hit 2 home runs and had an outstanding diving catch in right field. Gerardo Parra added a home run and the Brewers took game 1 of the series 7-0.
The wheels came off in game 2. Matt Garza only lasted 3.1 innings, giving up 10 runs. The Mets scored 10 runs in the 4th inning on their way to a 14-1 win over the Brewers to snap their 5-game losing streak. Brewers shortstop Luis Sardiñas, who was just called up, went 2 for 3 and scored the Brewers’ only run in his first Major League start.
The Brewers’ bats were silent once again as Noah Syndergaard recorded his first Major League win. Wily Peralta gave up 5 runs in 5 innings in his 5th loss of the season. There was a scary moment in the 6th inning when Syndergaard hit Carlos Gomez in the head with a 97 mph fastball. Gomez left the game, but he did not suffer a concussion. He did, however, have an ear flap shaped bruise on his cheek.
Injury News
Jean Segura was placed on the disabled list on Thursday due to a broken pinkie. He broke the finger sliding in to third base 2 days earlier. Segura was unhappy about being placed on the DL, and manager Craig Counsell likes that.
“I understand his position and I’m glad he voiced it strongly,” Counsell said. “I am. It makes you like, ‘This is a guy we want here.’ But it’s just too dangerous for him to play.”
The Brewers brought up Sardiñas to replace Segura. Sardiñas started Saturday’s game against the Mets and went 2 for 3 and a run scored.
Aramis Ramirez returned to the lineup on Friday after sitting out the previous 6 games with lower back tightness. He went 3 for 4 with an RBI in the Brewers 7-0 win over the Mets.
Jonathan Lucroy continues his recovery from a broken toe. He was cleared to catch bullpens on Friday. The only remaining hurdle is running, which may come soon. The Brewers are hoping to send Lucroy on a rehab assignment as soon as next week. Lucroy is now wearing new cleats from New Balance that has a protective carbon fiber toe cap.
Roster Moves
Scooter Gennett was optioned to AAA Colorado Springs. He had been struggling at the plate this year, hitting just .154. Since coming off the DL on May 5, he has just 4 hits and 7 strikeouts in 36 at bats for a .111 average. The Brewers called up pitcher Corey Knebel to help an overtaxed bullpen.

Bassball Fever lost again this week, 6-3. The strikeouts were there, but the ERA and WHIP were a bit too high. Brooks Robinson finally got a win, 6-4, and 3 of the 4 losing categories were close. I guess threatening the manager last week worked. Keep him on the hot seat!

The Craig Counsell Era began this week with a bang. The Brewers managed to win the first game against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers in come from behind fashion, giving the Brewers their first 3-game winning streak of the season. The Dodgers snapped that winning streak on Tuesday, but the Brewers still managed to split the 4-game series. Then the Cubs came to town and the Brewers took 2 of 3 from them.
The Brewers faced the Dodgers and Kershaw in Manager Craig Counsell’s first game at the helm. Kershaw has been successful at Miller Park, going 4-0 and not allowing more than 1 run in any game. It appeared that he would continue that dominance as the Dodgers had a 3-0 lead going into the 6th inning. Hector Gomez led off the inning with a triple and Gerardo Parra followed with another one, cutting the lead to 3-1. Kershaw managed to get out of the inning without any more damage.
The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the eighth. Hector Gomez hit his first career home run to get the Brewers to within 3-2. Adam Lind came in as a pinch hitter against one of the toughest and hit a double to right center field. Chris Hatcher came in for Kershaw and Carlos Gomez hit a double of his own to score Lind. After a Jason Rogers ground out, Gomez was on third with 2 outs and Ryan Braun coming to the plate. Hatcher managed to break Braun’s bat, but Braun beat out a base hit and Gomez scored the lead run. Francisco Rodriguez closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth and the Craig Counsell Era started off with a win.
Zack Greinke shut down the Brewers in game 2 of the 4 game series. He went 7.2 innings and gave up just one unearned run. The Crew did have the lead going in to the 6th, as Matt Garza kept the Dodgers off the board until Justin Turner hit a 3-run home run. Jimmy Rollins and Adrian Gonzalez each hit 2-run home runs in the 7th to give the Dodgers a 7-1 lead. Both teams tacked on a run in the 9th to finish off an 8-2 defeat that snapped the Brewers’ 3-game winning streak.
The Brewers jumped all over the Dodgers in the third game of the series. Scooter Gennett and Lind each hit 2-run home runs in the first inning as 5 of the first 7 Brewer batters scored. Wily Peralta pitched 8 strong innings to make sure that the lead held. Joc Pederson hit 2 home runs, but it was not enough for the Dodgers.
Game 4 was competitive until the sixth inning. The score was tied at 3 until the Dodgers scored 4 in the inning, giving them a 7-3 lead. Then Dodgers’ catcher Yasmani Grandal hit 2 3-run home runs, one in the 8th and one in the 9th, to double his home run total for the year. He also tripled his RBI total by getting 8 for the day. The only bright spot in the 14-4 loss was Mike Fiers striking out the side on 9 pitches in the 4th inning. Even with the loss, the Brewers managed to split the series.
Jimmy Nelson pitched 7 innings against the Cubs, striking out 11. Unfortunately, he also gave up 3 out of the 4 home runs hit by Chicago. Two costly errors on the same play ended up allowing the Cubs to score the eventual winning run in the 9th. Third baseman Elian Herrera had a throwing error that allowed Addison Russell to advance to second, then Gennett threw the ball to third with nobody covering, allowing Russell to advance to third. Russell then scored on a 2-out infield single giving the Cubs a 7-3 lead. Ryan Braun hit a 3-run home run in the 9th, but that last Cubs run proved to be the game winner.
Khris Bryant hit his much anticipated first home run, a 3-run shot in the third, but the Brewers were able to overcome that with 3 home runs of their own, including Jason Rogers’ less anticipated first home run of his career. Things got so bad for the Cubs that they had their catcher, David Ross, pitch in the 8th inning. He proved to have the best outing for Chicago, getting the Brewers out 1-2-3. The final score was 12-4.
Sunday was Mother’s Day, and Martin Maldonado’s mother was visiting from Puerto Rico. Maldonado and Herrera hit back to back home runs in the 7th for a 2-1 lead. An RBI double by Anthony Rizzo in the 8th tied the game, setting up some extra inning dramatics. The Brewers loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th inning with one out. Maldonado came up and hit a 1-1 fastball over Cubs’ right fielder Jose Soler to drive in Braun for the winning run. The win gave the Brewers the series win. After losing their first 7 series, the Crew has now won 2 and split 1.
The Brewers were happy to have Gennett and Jean Segura back in the lineup. Segura missed Monday’s game due to being hit by a pitch the day before. Gennett was on the disabled list with a lacerated hand that happened after the game against the Pirates on April 19. He also returned to the lineup on Tuesday against the Dodgers. Carlos Gomez and Aramis Ramirez each had 3 days off this week. Gomez has a sore hip and was kept out as a precautionary measure. Ramirez is dealing with a sore back. Meanwhile, Jonathan Lucroy is making good progress with his broken toe. He was seen hitting in batting practice on Saturday and is on schedule for coming back on the short end of the original 4-6 week projection.

The Brewers had quite a week. It started with 2 more losses against the Reds before they finished off April with a win. Then, after losing the series opener at Wrigley Field, they beat the Cubs on Saturday and Sunday for their first 2-game winning streak and their first series win. Jean Segura was hit in the head for the second time this season, causing him to stay behind in Chicago to get checked out. Then, after all of that, it was announced on Sunday evening that Ron Roenicke had been dismissed as the Brewers manager.
The Reds jumped on the Brewers in game 1 in Cincinnati, building a lead that even a furious 4 run rally in the ninth still had the Brewers lose 9-6. Jimmy Nelson was taken out of the game with one out in the third, giving up 7 earned runs, striking out 1 and walking 5. Jean Segura continued his hot hitting going 2-5 with 3 RBIs. Adam Lind added 2 hits with a run scored and another driven in. All of that was not enough for the Crew as they fell to 4-16.
Johnny Cueto pitched 8 strong innings in game 2, giving up just 2 runs while striking out 6. Kyle Lohse gave up 3 home runs that accounted for all 4 of the Reds’ runs for the game. Lohse has given up at least one home run in each of his first five starts this season. Aramis Ramirez and Ryan Braun each hit solo home runs, but that was it for the offense as the Brewers fell 4-2.
Game 3 of the series was a different story, one that Brewer fans thought they would see more of this season. Lind and Khris Davis each hit solo home runs in the second to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead. Braun added another solo shot in the fifth for his second home run in 2 games. Logan Schafer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth to make the score 4-2. Braun then took a 2-2 pitch and hit his second home run of the game, a grand slam to put the game out of reach. The final score was 8-3. With that win, they tied the franchise record for least amount of wins in a month (5). Their .227 winning percentage for April was the fifth worst month in their history.
The Brewer bats again went silent, this time in Wrigley Field. They once again could not find that elusive 2-game winning streak. Wily Peralta only gave up a solo home run, but that was enough for Jon Lester. The Cubs lefty did not give up a run in 7 innings and the Cubs bullpen shut the door on the Brewers for a 1-0 win.
The Brewers bats came alive in the second game. Braun hit a 2-run home run in the first, his 4th home run in 4 games. Mike Fiers pitched 6 innings and only gave up a solo home run while striking out 12 Cubs batters. Segura finished the day 4-5 with 2 RBIs, a run scored, and his fifth stolen base.
The series finale against the Cubs was Ramirez’s game to shine. He opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second and finished the scoring with a 2-out 2-run single in the eighth. That gave the Brewers a 5-3 lead that would hold up to give the team their first series win and their first 2-game winning streak of the season.
Unfortunately, one of the plays that set up those runs could cost the Brewers. With runners at first and third and nobody out, Segura squared around to bunt. A 95mph fast ball came up and in and hit him in the front of the helmet. He was down for several minutes, then walked to first before coming out of the game. Segura stayed behind in Chicago for observation. CT scans came up negative, which is good news.
The big bombshell for the week came on Sunday night. The Brewers announced that they were letting manager Ron Roenicke go after 4+ years. Doug Melvin mentioned the last 100 games was a big part of the decision. He and owner Mark Attanasio made the decision after the series against the Reds and made the announcement after the Cubs series. Craig Counsell was announced as Roenicke’s successor, and not as an interim manager. Counsell was signed to a 3 year contract.
The Brewers are not quite ready to pack it in for the season. They are going to see what happens now and see if they can be competitive for the rest of the season. If not, there may be many changes in store for the Brewers.

The Brewers continue with their franchise worst start by losing 5 more games this week. On the bright side, they won 2 games this week. The Brewers 2 suffered more injuries to key players. They had a couple of games where the bats came alive, but they remain near the bottom of most offensive categories.
The injuries started on Sunday night. Scooter Gennett had a run-in with something in the shower and ended up with stitches in his hand. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list, joining Carlos Gomez. The Brewers called up Elian Herrera to replace him.
The week started off with a 6-1 loss against Cincinnati to open a four game series at Miller Park. Those 6 runs were the most the Reds have scored all season. Ryan Braun hit his first home run of the season in the ninth, but that was about as good as it got for the Brew Crew. Jonathan Lucroy took a foul tip off of his toe and came out of the game the following inning. It turned out that Lucroy had broken his left big toe and will be out 4-6 weeks. Juan Centeno has been called up to replace Lucroy.
Braun’s home run was number 231, moving him ahead of Prince Fielder in to second place on the Brewers’ all time home run list. Robin Yount is still the leader with 251 home runs in a Brewer uniform.
The bats came alive in game 2. Martin Maldonado hit a 2-run home run and Elian Hernandez hit a grand slam as the Brewers scored a season high 10 runs. Unfortunately, the Reds had 5 home runs, 2 of them were grand slams, and scored 16 runs, 10 more than their previous season high set the night before.
Wednesday’s match up was a pitcher’s duel between Jimmy Nelson and Johnny Cueto. Nelson went 8 strong innings, striking out 5 and walking 2. Francisco Rodriguez came in to a 1-1 tie in the ninth. Billy Hamilton worked a one out walk and went to third on a Joey Votto single. After Todd Frazier popped out in foul territory, K-Rod unleashed a 55 foot changeup that got past Martin Maldonado that allowed Hamilton to score the winning run.
The Brewers finally got back in to the win column on Thursday, snapping an 8 game losing streak. Adam Lind and Aramis Ramirez each hit a home run and Jean Segura broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh with an RBI single. Braun stole third and came home on a throwing error for an insurance run. K-Rod came on in the ninth and recorded his 350th career save. Maldonado threw out Hamilton trying to steal second, making it the first time all year that a Reds’ base runner was caught stealing.
The Cardinals came in to Miller park on Friday to open a 3 game series. Jason Heyward and Jhonny Peralta each hit home runs and Carlos Martinez pitched 7 scoreless innings as the Cardinals won 3-0. Matt Garza went 6 innings and only allowed 1 run. Unfortunately, the Brewers offense again came up empty, getting shut out for the third time this season.
The Brewers entered the game with an 18 inning scoreless streak against the Cardinals. Kolton Wong hit an RBI triple and scored on a throwing error in the second and Matt Holiday hit a 3-run home run in the seventh, giving the Cards a 5-0 lead. The Brewers rallied to score 3 in the eighth to end the scoreless streak at 25 innings, but it was not enough.
Braun and Ramirez both requested the day off on Sunday, so the Brewers sported a lineup that consisted of 5 players that were not in the Opening Day starting lineup just 20 days ago. Even without their sluggers, the Brewers powered their way to a 6-3 victory. Lind hit a 2-run home run, Gerardo Parra hit an RBI triple, and Khris Davis and Herrera each added an RBI double.
The Brewers have had a terrible three weeks to open the season and the numbers back that up. They are among the worst five in the National League in the following categories: batting average, home runs, RBIs, stolen bases, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, strikeouts (hitting), walks (hitting), ERA, wins, saves, WHIP, opponent batting average, home runs allowed, errors, and fielding percentage. The only major categories that they are not in the bottom 5 are pitching strikeouts (6th worst) and pitching walks (9th worst). Add that to some pretty bad base running errors, and you have the formula for a really bad team. Their 4-15 record is by far the worst in the National League and has them 9 games behind the Cardinals.

Bassball Fever got its second win in a row, 6-4. Brooks Robinson lost again, this time 5-3. There were a rash of injuries, so I had to make a bunch of transactions.
Bassball Fever’s transactions: Added Jeurys Familia, Mike Moustakas, and Stephen Vogt. Dropped Scooter Gennett. Put Jonathan Lucroy and Greg Holland on DL. Ben Zobrist is on the bench due to being on the DL, but I don’t have anymore DL slots.
Brooks Robinson’s transactions: Added Jose Iglesias, Joakim Soria, Francisco Liriano, and Fernando Rodney. Dropped LaTroy Hawkins, Hisashi Iwakuma, and Cliff Lee. Put Ben Zobrist and Carlos Gomez on the DL.
