Brewers at Tigers

Carlos Gomez proved that he was OK the day after taking a pitch to the head. He hit a leadoff home run, went 2-5 with 2 RBI, and he drove in winning run. Ramirez scores the tying run with his 368th home run as a third baseman, tying Graig Nettles for 5th all-time behind Mike Schmidt, Eddie Mathews, Chipper Jones, and Adrian Beltre. The Brewers won the opening game in Detroit 3-2.

In game 2, Ryan Braun, Adam Lind, and Aramis Ramirez went back-to-back-to-back for the first time since August 27, 2012 (Braun, Ramirez, Corey Hart) in a 6-run 3rd inning. All 8 runs came with two outs as the Brewers won 8-1. Braun finished with 4 RBIs. Jimmy Nelson went 8 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits and striking out 5.

Braun hit another home run, his 10th of the season, but Jonathan Broxton continues to struggle. He gave up 3 runs with 2 outs in the eighth inning, giving the Tigers a 5-2 win. The Brewers failed to get their first series sweep of the year.

Brewers at Braves

The Brewers started their series in Atlanta with a wild game. The game was tied at 1 in the bottom of the 7th when Will Smith hit a batter with 1 out. Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez pointed out a foreign substance on Smith’s arm. Umpire Jim Joyce checked it out and immediately ejected Smith. The Braves went on to score 7 runs in the inning on their way to a 10-1 win. The only bright spot for the Brewers was when Braun hit a sacrifice fly in the 4th inning. That was Braun’s 791st RBI, breaking a tie with Paul Molitor for 3rd place on the Brewers’ all time RBI list.

Braun continued his hot hitting in the second of 4 games in Atlanta. He hit a 2-run home run in the 1st inning, walked and scored in the 7th, then hit a 2-run double later in the 7th. He finished the game 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. The Brewers scored 7 runs with 2 outs in the 7th inning on their way to an 11-0 win. Wily Peralta came out in the 5th inning with a tight left side.

Game 3 turned out to be a pitcher’s duel. The Brewers took a 2-0 lead into the 5th inning. The Braves tied it up in the bottom of the 5th and it remained that way until the 11th inning. Braves’ rookie Jace Peterson delivered a 2-out base hit to drive in the winning run. Will Smith had a successful outing the day after being ejected. He struck out 3 in an inning and two thirds.

The final game of the series in Atlanta was another pitcher’s duel. Jimmy Nelson gave up a single and walked 2 in the 6th inning and 2 of those runners scored. That proved to be enough for the Braves as the Brewers could only manage one run. Braun and Ramirez both had the day off.

Will Smith

Will Smith was suspended for 8 games following his ejections for a foreign substance on his arm. The substance turned out to be a mixture of resin and suntan lotion that he uses in the bullpen on Thursday. He forgot to take it off and was subsequently ejected from the game.  Smith is appealing the suspension and is available until the appeal is completed.

Injury News

Jonathan Lucroy took batting practice again on Friday. Lucroy has been on the disabled list since April 21 with a fractured toe. He has been progressing well and has been doing running drills. He will be sent on a rehab assignment soon.

Jean Segura has been on the disabled list since May 14 with a broken pinkie. He could come off the disabled list as early as Friday. Segura was upset that he was placed on the DL instead of being allowed to play through the pain, so it would be very likely that he gets right back in to the lineup.
